NIGROMA REVITALISES URBAN GREENERY IN MINNA , BOOSTS ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

   By Amina Yusuf

In order to sustain efforts at improving environmental sustainability, urban beautification, and the overall livability of Minna metropolis, the Niger State Road Maintenance Agency (NIGROMA) has successfully revived and restored a significant portion of the flowers planted along the Minna Book Roundabout–Mobile Junction corridor.

The Managing Director of NIGROMA, Mr. Usman Magaji, disclosed that upon assuming office, he observed that many of the flowers earlier planted by the Niger State Government had deteriorated due to inadequate maintenance, thereby diminishing the aesthetic value they were intended to provide.

“On assumption of duty, I noticed with concern that most of the flowers planted to beautify our roads and public spaces were gradually withering away.

As an agency committed to environmental maintenance and urban development, we considered it necessary to intervene and restore them,” he stated.

Mr. Magaji explained that the initiative forms part of the agency’s corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability drive aimed at preserving public infrastructure and enhancing the visual appeal of the state capital.

According to him, NIGROMA has so far replanted over 360 flower seedlings of different varieties across the corridor, with nearly 90 percent of the affected flowers now restored and thriving.

“To ensure sustainability, protective baskets have been installed to prevent unnecessary interference, while dedicated personnel carry out routine watering of the flowers every morning and evening,” he added.

He further revealed that the agency commits between ₦47,000 and ₦50,000 daily toward the maintenance exercise, noting that despite harsh weather conditions affecting some plants, the agency remains resolute in sustaining the initiative.

Mr. Magaji emphasised that beyond beautification, the flowers contribute significantly to environmental health by improving air quality, increasing oxygen supply, and helping to reduce carbon dioxide levels within the metropolis.

He reaffirmed NIGROMA’s commitment to supporting the urban renewal vision of the Niger State Government through continuous maintenance of public spaces and environmental enhancement projects.

The initiative has continued to receive commendation from residents and road users, who described the renewed greenery along the route as a positive step toward creating a cleaner, greener, and more attractive Minna.
