CONTROLLED WATER RELEASE FROM SHIRORO RESERVOIR DUE TO INCREASED INFLOWS.

RESIDENTS ALONG THE KADUNA RIVER BASIN ADVISED TO REMAIN VIGILANT.

The Niger State Government wishes to alert residents and communities along the Kaduna River Basin of the possibility of increased water levels arising from sustained inflows into the Shiroro Reservoir during the ongoing 2026 rainy season.

This alert follows a notification from North South Power Company Limited (NSPCL), operators of the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant, indicating that recent hydrological observations show improved inflows into the River Kaduna catchment and the Shiroro Reservoir.

In line with the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), high inflows are expected to continue during the rainy season.

CONTROLLED WATER RELEASE

Due to the continued rise in reservoir inflows, controlled water release from the Shiroro Reservoir may become necessary in September 2026 to enhance the safety of the dam structure and downstream communities.

Residents are therefore advised to:

Remain vigilant and exercise utmost caution throughout the remainder of the rainy season.

Avoid unnecessary exposure to river channels and floodplains, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Farmers should exercise caution, especially those cultivating along the River Kaduna floodplain.

Fishermen, boat operators and other water-based activity operators should take extra precautions.

Community leaders are urged to promptly disseminate this information to residents within their communities.

Pay close attention to further official advisories from the government and relevant authorities.

DO NOT PANIC, STAY ALERT

The public is urged not to panic, but to remain alert and take appropriate precautionary measures to protect lives, property and livelihoods.

The Niger State Government, in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders, will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as necessary.

Residents are advised to treat this advisory with the seriousness it deserves and cooperate with relevant authorities throughout the remaining days of September 2026.
