ZAMFARA SECURITY CRISIS: 22 PEOPLE KILLED IN FRESH BANDIT ATTACK

No fewer than 22 people are feared dead after heavily armed gunmen suspected to be bandits ambushed a convoy of traders travelling under the protection of Nigerian Army troops in Zamfara State.
The violent assault occurred early Sunday morning in the Bukkuyum Local Government Area of the State.
The traders were journeying from Gurusu to Gwashi to participate in Gwashi’s weekly market when their convoy was intercepted.
Malam Aminu Gwashi, a local resident who confirmed the incident, stated that the fatalities include both civilian traders and military personnel. Numerous other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Bukkuyum General Hospital for emergency medical care.
The sister communities of Gwashi and Bukkuyum have faced relentless banditry in recent times. The recurring violence has severely crippled local commerce, paralyzed agricultural supply chains, and devastated economic activities across the agrarian region.
Journalists have met a wall of silence when seeking verification from military officials. Calls placed to Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Information Officer of Operation Fansan Yamma, went unanswered. Similarly, Major Osoba Olaniyi, the Information Officer for the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, did not respond to requests for comment.
Neither the Nigerian Army headquarters nor the Zamfara State Police Command has released an official statement regarding the ambush or confirmed the definitive casualty count.
