ADAMAWA POLITICS: 21 LG CHAIRMEN, 226 COUNCILLORS DEFECT TO APC

All 21 local government chairmen and 226 councillors in Adamawa State have resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection took place on Monday, 19 October 2026, with the majority of the council chairmen submitting formal resignation letters to their respective PDP ward chairmen across the state’s 21 local government areas.

In some of the resignation letters obtained by reporters, the local leaders cited personal reasons, stating that the decision followed extensive consultations with their families, constituents, and political associates.

Among those who resigned was the Chairman of Demsa Local Government Area, Mr Akham Jalo. In his letter, Jalo explained that his transition to the APC was motivated by a desire to align with the progressive vision of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and to bring more dividends of democracy to his people.

He emphasized that the movement represents collective progress, unity, and development, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to good governance, peace, and public welfare.

Jalo expressed his gratitude to the leadership and members of the PDP for the opportunity to serve, assuring the people of Demsa that his defection to the APC would unlock new opportunities and accelerate development in the council.

He further urged his supporters to remain calm, united, and dedicated to supporting the APC for the greater advancement of Demsa, Adamawa State, and Nigeria.

Confirming the mass defection, the APC State Publicity Secretary, Victor Dogo, verified that all 21 council chairmen, alongside area development administrators and 226 councillors, officially joined the party on Monday.

Dogo attributed the cross-carpeting to the politicians’ desire to align with their political godfather, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who has consistently supported them.

According to Dogo, the local leaders expressed that remaining in a different political party than the governor felt like a waste of time, prompting them to move to the same platform.

Meanwhile, political analysts in Adamawa State have described the mass defection as a highly choreographed and staged political move that had been in the works for a long time.
