XENOPHOBIA : NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT POSTPONES CITIZENS’ EVACUATION TO WEDNESDAY

Due to unforeseen logistical considerations, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shifted the planned repatriation of stranded Nigerians in South Africa to Wednesday.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, in terse statement to journalists, said the flight was initially scheduled for Monday but was later moved forward.

She said “It is unclear whether the returnees will land in Abuja or Lagos and how many would comprise the first batch”.

Although the foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday that the repatriation flight will be operated by Air Peace, he did not confirm the flight time.

A screening exercise for over 1,000 Nigerian citizens in South Africa began last Thursday and was set to conclude on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria said it had “negotiated waivers with host authorities” so that those with “immigration-related offences” would be allowed to leave on the eventual repatriation flights rather than be detained.
