NIGER WARD DEVELOPMENT PROJECT STEERING COMMITTEE FLAGS POOR WORKMANSHIP, IMPLEMENTATION DELAYS AS IT CONCLUDES PROJECT INSPECTION.

The Niger State Steering Committee of the Ward Development Project has raised concerns over poor workmanship and implementation delays during a three-day inspection of ongoing and completed projects across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The inspection, led by the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Hon. Isah Adamu, included the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana, and other committee members that included the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Bello Yakubu Paiko; Director-General, Ward Relations, Yahuza; Director-General, Ward Development, Amina Ibrahim Magaji; Zone A Coordinator, Idris Bayo; Zone B Coordinator, Fatima Zahra; and Zone C Coordinator, Idris Arzika.

The exercise covered projects in education, water supply, drainage and market infrastructure across selected local government areas.

Hon Isah Adamu said the inspection was designed to complement assessments by the project’s Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, verify reported achievements and ensure compliance with approved specifications and delivery timelines.

He stressed that effective monitoring was essential to safeguarding public funds and ensuring the delivery of quality infrastructure that meets the needs of beneficiary communities.

In Zone A, the committee inspected motorised boreholes in Gbako, a completed solar-powered borehole in Edati, drainage projects in Bida and classroom renovation in Lavun.

The commissioner expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of work and pace of construction on the classroom renovation project in Daban Ward, Lavun Local Government Area, and called for strict adherence to approved standards and timely completion.

In Zone B, the committee assessed completed motorised boreholes in Gurara, classroom renovation projects in Munya and Paikoro, and renovated classrooms equipped with furniture in Shiroro.

The delegation also inspected a completed solar-powered borehole in Gunu Ward, Shiroro, but discovered that construction of a market store at Mutun Daya had yet to commence.

In Zone C, the inspection covered classroom construction and renovation at primary schools in Rafi, Wushishi and Bosso local government areas, alongside a solar-powered borehole in Maikunkele Ward and perimeter fencing at Yahaya Bawa Bosso Primary School.
The committee said the findings would inform further monitoring and follow-up actions, particularly on projects requiring improvements in workmanship, accelerated implementation and compliance with approved timelines.

The inspection forms part of efforts to strengthen accountability, ensure value for money and guarantee that projects under the Niger State Ward Development Project deliver their intended benefits in line with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s New Niger Agenda.
