FG, NLC AGREE ON CIVIL SERVANT ARREARS

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigeria Labour Congress have agreed to clear outstanding peculiar allowance arrears for workers, with disbursements set to kick off this November.
Signed on Tuesday, October 27, the agreement dictates that the arrears—which took effect on May 1, 2026—will be disbursed in three equal monthly installments.
The resolution emerged from a high-level meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, spearheaded by its president, Joe Ajaero, amid mounting anxieties over workers’ welfare and skyrocketing fuel prices.
To further cushion the economic impact, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a monthly transport support allowance of 70,000 Naira for all public service employees across all cadres, spanning a six-month period starting November 2026.
This breakthrough was reached just as a strict four-day ultimatum handed down by organized labour to address minimum wage grievances and fuel hikes expired on Tuesday.
Moving forward, both delegations agreed to immediately set up a joint negotiation committee to deliberate on and finalize an effective implementation date for the new national minimum wage.
Prior to the dialogue, the Nigeria Labour Congress had aggressively demanded a rollback in pump prices and a comprehensive review of the 70,000 Naira monthly minimum wage, pointing out the severe financial strain current living costs place on Nigerian households.
While this pact successfully secures the payment of backlogged allowances and provides immediate, temporary transportation relief, broader discussions regarding the statutory minimum wage and related labour issues remain ongoing.
