INEC AMENDS 2027 LIST: 66 CANDIDATES RESTORED, OTHERS AXED

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reinstated 66 governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates after conducting a comprehensive review of the final candidate list for the 2027 general election.
This decision follows the publication of the initial final list on October 10, 2026, and a subsequent press statement issued on October 13, 2026, in which the Commission pledged to review all incoming grievances and petitions.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the Commission received numerous complaints regarding the omission of political parties, the wrongful inclusion of candidates missing from their parties’ membership registers, and allegations of multiple nominations.
Following an assessment of these complaints against official records and legal provisions, INEC found merit in several petitions, leading to the approval and inclusion of the affected candidates and political parties, while declining those that lacked legal merit.
Haruna verified that several names wrongfully published on the initial list have been officially removed after verification proved they were missing from party registers, while other candidates were disqualified for failing to comply with statutory nomination guidelines.
Providing a statistical breakdown, the National Commissioner revealed that INEC received 69 petitions from 12 political parties spanning 26 states regarding the governorship election, resulting in 41 successful appeals and 28 rejections.
For the State Houses of Assembly elections, the Commission received 61 petitions from 11 political parties across 11 states, out of which 25 appeals succeeded and 36 failed.
The Commission emphasized that all modifications concerning the affected candidates, political parties, and states will be fully updated and reflected on the official INEC website.
In closing, INEC reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining complete transparency and protecting the overall credibility of the upcoming electoral process.
