AGRICULTURE: ENGINE FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

With vast arable land and enormous agricultural potential, the state is positioning the sector as the engine of economic growth, job creation, food security and sustainable development.

To sustain this momentum, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago appointed Hon. Isah Sidi Rijau as Commissioner for Agriculture during the recent cabinet reshuffle, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to transforming agriculture into the backbone of the state’s economy.

For Hon. Sidi Rijau, the assignment is clear: consolidate ongoing reforms, strengthen support for farmers and accelerate the state’s agricultural transformation.

He described agriculture as the top priority of the Bago administration, commending the governor’s sustained investment in the sector and pledging to build on the gains already recorded.

The commissioner pointed to the recent distribution of 250 tractors, 50 combine harvesters, 150,000 bags of fertiliser, 1,500 planters, ploughs, boom sprayers and harrows as a major boost to mechanised farming and agricultural productivity.

According to him, the intervention reflects the administration’s determination to move beyond subsistence farming to a modern, technology-driven and commercially competitive agricultural system.

He added that the vision extends beyond increased food production to building a resilient agricultural value chain that supports processing, storage, transportation, marketing and export, positioning Niger State as a leading force in Nigeria’s agricultural economy
