FOOD SECURITY: NIGER FARMERS APPEAL TO BAGO’S ADMINISTRATION FOR SUPPORT

The Niger State Government, under Farmer Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, has been called upon to provide critical Farming implements and inputs quickly to enhance food security and boost agricultural productivity.
The Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) Niger State chapter, Alhaji Muhammad Manko Abubakar, made this call while addressing journalists in Minna, Niger State recently.
Alhaji Manko noted that the call became necessary as farmers across Niger State continued to face the challenges of high cost of modern farming implements and inputs, making it difficult for them to access this tools.
He said although the administration of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umar Bago is doing its best to provide farm inputs and other critical farming tools, it needs to do more to end the challenges farmers face daily across Niger State.
According to him, staple foods such as rice, cassava, beans, yam , garri and others would be much more affordable if farmers could cultivate safely and access farm inputs at a lower cost. He added that insecurity, high fertilizer costs, and rising fuel prices are the main drivers of current food inflation.
The Chairman of AFAN, Niger State Chapter, called on the administration of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umar Bago to support farmers with subsidized inputs, improve rural roads, provide security and offer irrigation and affordable credit facilities.
Alhaji Manko, who thanked the Government for fertilizer supply, called for a strong collaboration, between the Niger State Government and Farmers’ Association to identify practical solutions that would increase agricultural productivity in this year’s farming season.
