NIGER MINERS CONDOLE GOV. BAGO OVER 30 CUSTODIAL DEATHS, DEMAND NSCDC PROBE
The Chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), Niger State Chapter, Malam Abdulrazak Mohammed Yusuf has called on Governor Mohammed Umar Bago and relevant security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the controversial deaths of over 30 artisanal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Addressing journalists in Minna, Yusuf described the tragic incident as an unfortunate and avoidable catastrophe.
He maintained that the loss of lives could have been prevented had the NSCDC personnel strictly adhered to standard operational procedures.
The tragedy follows a coordinated sting operation conducted by NSCDC operatives on September 15 and 16, aimed at ridding Niger State of illegal mining activities.
The enforcement sweep led to the confiscation of mining exhibits and the arrest of multiple suspects, who were subsequently detained.

While acknowledging the ongoing joint efforts of law enforcement agencies to sanitize the state’s mining sector, the MAN Chairman strongly emphasized the need for greater professionalism and operational accountability.
He argued that the primary mandate of security agencies must always center on the protection of lives and properties, urging operatives to prioritize human rights and the rule of law while executing their lawful duties.
Yusuf extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, offering prayers for the eternal repose of the victims’ souls.
He also commiserated with Governor Bago, acknowledging the profound administrative and moral burden this tragedy places on the leadership of Niger State.
Concluding his address, the Chairman urged the Niger State Government to ensure that no stone is left unturned in delivering swift justice to the victims and securing fair compensation for their grieving families.
